ALLOW YOUR CHILD TO ACQUIRE A SKILL B4 UNIVERSITY.
I must confess here that what brought me to this level I am now was skill and talent acquired through thick and thin when I was coming up.
From day one of my higher Institution till my graduation ,it was the skills I aquired in event management that helped me to sponsore myself academicaly.
Ever since then I decided to take it upon myself to make sure that I make impact in the society through promoting skills and talents.
A student with talent or skills in the university cant be compared with non skilled students.
The different is clear.
In Nigeria today ,things have seriously changed.Around 80s children were encourage to go to business and forget about higher education,in the 90s children were encouraged to acquire higher education and nobody talked about skills.
Many people started graduating and unemployment sets in because there were limited jobs outside there.
When the level of unemployment increased in Nigeria ,people now discovered that instead of this children sitting at home waiting for employment letter,if one can create job for himself ,that would solve a big problem in the society.
The importance of skills acquisition in Nigeria cannot be overemphasized. And for Nigeria to be economically self-reliant, we must necessarily diversify our economy and as well encourage the youth to embrace self-employment through skills acquisition, entrepreneurship, self-reliance and financial empowerment.
A skill can be defined as the ability to do something well, usually gained through training or experience. Skill acquisition on the other hand involves the development of a new skill, practice or a way of doing things, usually gained through training or experience. The types of skills that can be acquired through trainings include
hair dressing, fashion designing, tailoring etc; mechanic, electrical, repairs of GSM handset, wrist watches, air- conditioner etc; and entrepreneurial (small scale business such as operation of kiosk, buying and selling of spare parts, restaurants etc).
Skill is very important in the life of every citizen. The reason why many technicians earns more than some university graduates is because the technicians acquired more of skills than the theories the graduates were feed with when they were in universities. It can take you to places you do not expect you will ever find yourself. Skill acquisition is the ability to be trained on a particular task or function and become expert in it. It is a pity that there is ‘huge parading’ of unemployment in many parts of the world today. This hot potato (current issue under discussion, unemployment) is giving many youths in different parts of the world a sleepless night. It is one of the causes of rapid growth in crimes in many parts of the world. But, do you think there is any relationship between someone who has acquired skill on how to perform a particular job and make money from it and unemployment? The answer is no because the skill he has already acquired can always speak for him or her.
Today, there are many unemployed graduates in the world. One of the problems of the education system of Africa is that it lacks imparting of skills on the students. The most number of unemployed is found in Africa Continent. According to International Labour Congress, in 2013, Africa had the highest unemployment rate. The truth remain that the major causes of the unemployment among these vibrant youths is lack of skill to back up what they learnt from their institutions of learning. When these graduates were still in school, they did not border to learn at least one single skill, maybe that which is related in computer card designing, typing, plumbing, electric maintenance and others. If they have learnt any skill at all, the rate of unemployment will reduce among them. Instead of learning any single skill during their holidays when they were still student, they were busy watching various “species” of videos in their individual homes, moving from one joint to another, partying from one town to another, and changing from one girl or guy to another.
